Official ceremony of handover of nuclear fuel at the Rooppur NPP site

The official ceremony dedicated to handover of the first batch of Russian fresh nuclear fuel for Unit 1 of the NPP was held at the construction site of the Rooppur NPP (Pabna District, Bangladesh) on October 5.

The official ceremony was attended online by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

Also, the event was attended at the site by Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation, Alexei Ferapontov, Deputy Head of the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision (Rostechnadzor),  Andrey Petrov, First Deputy Director General for Nuclear Energy of Rosatom State Corporation – President of JSC Atomstroyexport, as well as other representatives of the Russian and Bangladesh parties.

On September 29, the first nuclear fuel was delivered on a special flight from Russia to Bangladesh, and then, with strict adherence to all safety measures, transported to the NPP construction site.

On July 13, 2023, the ceremony was held for the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) to issue Classes B, D, and E licenses required for import, transportation and subsequent handling of fresh nuclear fuel at the NPP site.

Issuance of the licenses and, consequently, fuel delivery was preceded by BAERA’s joint work with the departments of Rostechnadzor Headquarters, JSC “VO “Safety” and the Scientific and Engineering Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SEC NRS), which was aimed at providing support in conducting safety reviews and developing license conditions.

JSC “VO “Safety” renders the consulting and engineering services in the field of regulation of nuclear and radiation safety within the framework of the Rooppur NPP construction to the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) under the Contract of 31.12.2021 and General Framework Contract of 18.11.2016.
