May 26 a specialized Nuclear Forum Atomexpo-2009 started in Moscow’s Expocentre. The forum will frame a specialized exhibition and congress “Nuclear Power. Development through Cooperation”.  The exhibitors are largest Russian and foreign nuclear industry companies, including Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, JSC Atomenergoprom, AREVA, Siemens, Alstom etc.

Addressing the congress opening session, Russian first vice prime minister Sergey Sobyanin noted the government attached “primary significance” to the nuclear industry development. At present, SC Rosatom has been tasked to increase labor efficiency, reduce production costs, ensure safe operation of nuclear power plants and develop new technologies.

Speaking at the exhibition inauguration ceremony, Russian energy minister Sergey Shmatko noted that nuclear power acquires a special significance in the background of the current financial and economic crisis. “On the one hand, it solves a serious task of further development of high technologies and creates many new jobs in industry,” he said.

Speaker of State Duma Boris Gryzlov has welcomed the participants of ATOMEXPO 2009. In his welcoming address he pointed out the big work Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation has done in the last years to reorganize and develop the nuclear industry. “We have created an efficient system of state and corporate management aimed at ensuring the unity of the nuclear industry under the aegis of the Government. Today, we are substantially reforming our legislation in the field of safe use of nuclear energy,” Gryzlov wrote.

Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation is interested in more active work in foreign markets and building up alliances, Sergey Kiriyenko said. He noted that in conditions of the crisis the nuclear industry development program remained unchanged. “We have just moved its frames a bit,” Kiriyenko said. If earlier it was planned to commission two reactors a year commencing 2012, now this has been moved to 2014 due to the drop in electricity demand, however, national investment programs have not changed, including the Russian one in the field of nuclear power.
