Specialists of JSC “VO “Safety” participated in the roundtable discussions in Obninsk

June 27, a roundtable discussion was held under the agenda of the activities to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the world’s first nuclear power plant that took place in the Health and Leisure Center of the RF SRC Institute of Physics and Power Engineering named after A. Leypunskiy (Obninsk). The subject of the discussion was “Topical issues of safety regulation in the nuclear power industry.” The event was arranged by Rostechnadzor tо commemorate the tercentenary of the Federal Service. Deputy Head of Rostechnadzor Mr. A. Ferapontov moderated the discussion.

The discussion engaged specialists of Rostechnadzor and representatives of the following leading nuclear companies: SC Rosatom, JSC Concern Rosenergoatom, SEC NRS, JSC “VO “Safety”, NRC Kurchatov Institute, etc.

The participants discussed topical issues of the regulatory development in the field of use of atomic energy. When delivering their speeches, A. Shutikov, First Deputy CEO for NPP operation in Russia of JSC Concern Rosenergoatom, and S. Adamchik, Inspector General of SC Rosatom, paid particular attention to the importance of safety culture development among both common personnel working at nuclear facilities and top managers who must set the safety of facilities and activities as their primary objective which is of a higher priority than company’s financial and economic indicators.

There were also presentations about the evolution of regulatory documents specifying rules for RW emissions and releases into the environment, about technological advancement in radiation protection and nuclear technologies.

Summarizing the discussion, Deputy Head of Rostechnadzor Mr. A. Ferapontov commended the roundtable discussion. In conclusion, he congratulated the participants with the 65th anniversary of the nuclear industry and noted that the safety assurance of nuclear facilities is a serious task that requires many efforts, but it is of vital importance. It was well-defined by Sir Winston Churchill: “If you think safety is expensive, try an accident.”
