Installation of the core catcher has been launched at the El-Dabaa NPP Unit 1.

The core catcher is an important element for safety of the NPP with VVER-1200 reactor, which, in case of a severe accident with core destruction and RPV melt-through, will ensure safety of the environment and people as it will keep corium fragments within the reactor containment. The core catcher is a vessel installed on supports under the reactor pressure vessel and consists of the following main elements: casing, filler, maintenance platform, cantilever truss in assembly with bottom plate, and water supply valve.

The components of the core catcher for the El Dabaa NPP Unit 1 were delivered to the site in spring and summer of 2023.

All components of the core catcher were manufactured at JSC “Tyazhmash”, where experts from the Penza Branch of JSC “VO “Safety” took part in the conformity assessment.

In the near future, the components of the core catcher for Unit 2 will be delivered to the site.
