{"id":11811,"date":"2014-07-31T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-31T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vo.afonico-test.ru\/novosti-otrasli\/core-catcher-on-its-way-to-belarus-2\/"},"modified":"2014-07-31T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-07-31T09:00:00","slug":"core-catcher-on-its-way-to-belarus-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vosafety.ru\/en\/novosti-otrasli\/core-catcher-on-its-way-to-belarus-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Core catcher on its way to Belarus 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>The Volgodonsk branch of AEM-Technology has started preparing the core melt trap, or core catcher, for shipment to the site of the Belarus nuclear power plant, near Ostrovets.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A core catcher is a device provided to catch the molten core material\u00a0\u2014 corium\u00a0\u2014 of a nuclear reactor in case of a nuclear meltdown and prevent it from escaping the containment building.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued July 30, Atomenergomash (AEM) said the core catcher is intended for the second reactor of the plant. AEM-Technology\u00a0\u2014 which fabricated the components\u00a0\u2014 is an affiliate of Atomenergomash.<\/p>\n<p>The metal structure is 14\u00a0meters high and 6.5\u00a0m across. It weighs about 750\u00a0tonnes, AEM said.<\/p>\n<p>The core catcher for Belarus-1\u00a0was delivered to the plant site in October. Construction of unit 2\u00a0started early last month, following the pouring of first concrete for the reactor\u2019s basemat. Both units are scheduled to start operation by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The Belarusian nuclear power plant will consist of two power-generating units with the total generating capacity of up to 2400MW (1200MW each). The Russian design AES-2006\u00a0has been chosen to build the power plant. The design is fully compliant with international standards and IAEA recommendations. The Russian merged company OAO NIAEP\u00a0\u2014 ZAO Atomstroyexport (ASE) is the general designer and the general contractor for building the power plant.<\/p>\n<p>AEM-Technology has also made and delivered core catchers for the first and second units of the Novovoronezh 2\u00a0nuclear power plant and for the first unit of the Baltic nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Volgodonsk branch of AEM-Technology has started preparing the core melt trap, or core catcher, for shipment to the site of the Belarus nuclear power plant, near Ostrovets.
