China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has been contracted to build the plant on a turnkey basis.<\/p>\n<p>The ground-breaking ceremony, held on 26\u00a0November, was attended by Pakistani and Chinese officials. Pakistan prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif used a spade to remove the first soil in preparation for construction of the two 1100\u00a0MWe units.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the ceremony, Sharif said, \u201cThe beginning of the 2200\u00a0MWe power project is indeed a proud moment in the energy history of Pakistan. This is one of the first steps of our goal of racing towards a \u2019load-shedding free\u2019 Pakistan.\u201d He said that nuclear energy \u201cwill form an increasingly significant component\u201d in meeting Pakistan\u2019s energy goals and that the Karachi Coastal Nuclear Power Project \u201cshould be seen as an important step forward in that direction.\u201d However, it \u201cwill have to be followed by many other such projects in other parts of the country with vital power needs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sharif said that the project is expected to be completed in 72\u00a0months, but urged \u201cthe engineers working on this project to complete it as soon as possible\u201d. He added, \u201cIt is required urgently because Pakistan needs power for a strong economy\u201d. Under its Nuclear Energy Vision 2050\u00a0program, Pakistan envisages having some 40,000\u00a0MWe of nuclear generating capacity by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan currently has a 40-year-old 125\u00a0MWe pressurized heavy water reactor at Karachi and another nuclear power plant at Chashma in northern Punjab province. This has two 300\u00a0MWe Chinese-built pressurized water reactors operating with two more under construction.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan is outside the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and largely excluded from world trade in nuclear materials and technology due to an absence of full scope safeguards.
