{"id":11726,"date":"2013-03-04T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-04T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vo.afonico-test.ru\/novosti-otrasli\/application-in-for-next-two-barakah-units\/"},"modified":"2013-03-04T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2013-03-04T09:00:00","slug":"application-in-for-next-two-barakah-units","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vosafety.ru\/en\/novosti-otrasli\/application-in-for-next-two-barakah-units\/","title":{"rendered":"Application in for next two Barakah units"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>An application for the construction of units 3\u00a0and 4\u00a0at the new Barakah plant in the UAE has been submitted by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) to the country\u2019s nuclear regulator.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Enec announced that it submitted the 10,000-page application for Barakah units 3\u00a0and 4\u00a0to the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) on 1\u00a0March. The move, it said, was \u201cthe culmination of 18\u00a0months of intense work by Enec and its prime contractor, the Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The application is based on that for Barakah units 1\u00a0and 2\u00a0and the safety analysis completed for Kepco\u2019s Shin Kori units 3\u00a0and 4\u00a0in South Korea. These are the reference units for the Barakah plant. Enec earlier said that its reactors will be \u201cessentially the same\u201d as those units \u201cbut supplemented with changes required to adapt to the UAE climatic conditions and any specific requirements for FANR\u201d. These differences relate to a 50\u00a0Hertz output instead of 60\u00a0Hertz, as well as higher temperatures and the possibility of sand storms.<\/p>\n<p>The construction licence application also includes the design changes identified from lessons learned from the Fukushima accident.<\/p>\n<p>Enec CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi commented, \u201cThis marks another important milestone in our program as we work towards delivering safe, clean, reliable and efficient nuclear energy to the UAE\u201d. He added, \u201cThe team has worked diligently to deliver to our regulator a comprehensive, high-quality application that draws from all the experience we have gained\u00a0\u2014 through our reference plants in Korea, the lessons learned from Fukushima, and our own experience with the first application process for units 1\u00a0and 2\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a $20\u00a0billion deal announced in December 2009, Enec selected a Korean consortium led by Kepco to build four APR-1400\u00a0reactors. All four units planned for Barakah, close to the border with Saudi Arabia, should be in operation by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Approval of construction licence application for units 1\u00a0and 2\u00a0came in July 2012. Enec said that construction work on the first two units is progressing on schedule. First concrete for unit 1\u00a0was poured the day after the construction licence was issued, while extensive preparatory work is underway at unit 2. First concrete for unit 2\u00a0expected to be poured by mid-2013.
