{"id":11655,"date":"2011-12-20T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-12-20T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vo.afonico-test.ru\/novosti-otrasli\/iter-financing-package-secured\/"},"modified":"2011-12-20T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2011-12-20T09:00:00","slug":"iter-financing-package-secured","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vosafety.ru\/en\/novosti-otrasli\/iter-financing-package-secured\/","title":{"rendered":"Iter financing package secured"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Details have been released of a final funding agreement that will see the European Union (EU) financing its commitments to the Iter fusion project in France for the next two years.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The EU Council of Ministers, the European Parliament and the European Commission have agreed where to find the \u20ac1.3\u00a0billion ($1.7\u00a0billion) needed for 2012\u00a0and 2013, with significant funds being reallocated from the EU\u2019s budgets for administration and natural resources development.<\/p>\n<p>A European Commission note explained that \u20ac840\u00a0million ($1.1\u00a0billion) would come through increasing EU spending on its \u2019competitiveness for growth and employment\u2019 budget for 2012\u00a0by \u20ac650\u00a0million ($853\u00a0million) and for 2013\u00a0by \u20ac190\u00a0million ($249\u00a0million). This money will be generated by cutting EU budgets for promoting natural resources by \u20ac450\u00a0million ($590\u00a0million) in 2011, and by reducing administration costs in 2011\u00a0and 2012\u00a0by \u20ac390\u00a0million ($512\u00a0million).<\/p>\n<p>Ministers and MEPs also agreed that another \u20ac360\u00a0million ($472\u00a0million) would be found within the EU\u2019s 2013\u00a0budget, without increasing overall expenditure. However, they did not identify which budgets will shrink as a result. Meanwhile, the final \u20ac100\u00a0million ($131\u00a0million) has already been earmarked for Iter.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the package, EU budget Commissioner Janusz Lewandowski said: \u201cI am relieved that the extra financial needs of Iter are now covered. The EU could not afford to lose credibility vis-\u00e0-vis its international partners involved in the project,\u201d namely the USA, Japan, South Korea, China, India and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>He praised the \u201cpositive spirit shown by the representatives of both the council and the parliament.\u201d Both will have to formally approve this new spending, but this is considered a formality. The deal was brokered by the council\u2019s outgoing Polish presidency.<\/p>\n<p>A council communiqu\u00e9 said: \u201cThis means that additional \u20ac1.2\u00a0billion ($1.6\u00a0billion) in commitments will be made available for Iter \u2026 This agreement allows the European Union to meet its international commitments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Iter fusion reactor is currently under construction at Cadarache, southern France. It is slated to be the first fusion reactor capable of producing net power. Fifty megawatts of input power should be enough to produce 500\u00a0megawatts output sustained on something closer to a steady state basis.
