The company expects the first unit, at Hinkley Point C, to be operating by 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Opening the <em>New Nuclear Opportunities<\/em> forum, Vincent de Rivaz, CEO of EDF Energy, said: \u201cAlready we have let 130\u00a0separate contracts to British companies with a total value in excess of \u00a350\u00a0million.\u201d He added that there will be more than 150\u00a0major contracts to be tendered and \u201can even larger number of offers for subcontractors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, de Rivaz said that the \u201cincreased commitment\u201d being made by EDF Energy needed to be matched by government. In a recorded address to the meeting, energy and climate change minister the Conservative Charles Hendry said he sees it as his job to \u201cremove the barriers to new nuclear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Further reassurance was provided by UK business secretary Vince Cable, part of the Liberal Democrat Party, who stated that there will be new nuclear plants on the condition that they will be built without public subsidy. Cable said that the coalition government has \u201ca responsibility to maintain stability and continuity\u2026 which will enable new nuclear power to proceed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Cable, the UK nuclear industry generated \u00a33.6\u00a0billion ($5.5\u00a0billion) in 2007\/8, employing around 45,000\u00a0people and accounted for some \u00a3700\u00a0million ($1\u00a0billion) worth of exports. \u201cIf the industry plans are realized, he said, \u201cwe\u2019re going to get up to 16\u00a0GWe of new nuclear by 2025\u00a0\u2014 that\u2019s equating to \u00a340\u00a0billion ($62\u00a0billion) of investment in new nuclear planned construction by energy companies, including \u00a317.6\u00a0billion ($27.3\u00a0billion) by EDF.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At a supply chain event for UK contractors yesterday, EDF Energy announced that it has awarded over \u00a350\u00a0million ($77\u00a0million) worth of contracts for the first nuclear power plant it plans to build in the UK.
